5 Signs That Your Garage Door Motor Needs Repair

Blog

Your garage door motor offers you a level of convenience that's often taken for granted. While the garage door motor can last years without the need for repair or replacement, it's not uncommon for it to break down or malfunction. If you are facing some problems with it, it's best that you find a garage door motor repair service expert. The expert will determine if the malfunctioning motor calls for a repair or a replacement. Here are 5 signs that your garage door motor needs repair.

Garage Door Won't Open and Close

The most common and obvious sign that your motor is broken is when the garage door won't open or close as it should. Confirm that there's nothing in the track of the door causing it to stick, meaning that the issue is actually with the opener and not the track. If you press any of the buttons on the remote but the garage door won't move, then this is a sign that the garage door motor is malfunctioning. Change the batteries in the remote first, and if the new batteries don't solve the problem, there's an issue with your garage door motor.

Garage Door Reverses as It Opens and Closes

If your garage door opens all the way and then randomly closes, or closes all the way and then suddenly reverses, then it's either a problem with a malfunctioning opener or the safety sensor. The role of the emergency reversal system is to help prevent injury or damage from a closing garage if there's something in its path. If you have cleared the garage's path of any obstructions, then call an expert to repair the garage door motor.

Random and Intermittent Function

If your garage door motor operates inconsistently, most likely, it has a wiring problem. If your garage door opens or closes randomly, or doesn't work when you need it to, then don't hesitate to call a professional to repair it before it puts lives and property at risk or stops working altogether.

Noisy Garage Door Motor

Your garage door shouldn't be noisy when opening or closing. It's actually a sign that the motor has a problem. If you hear scraping, rattling, grinding, screeching or other loud or strange noises, you should call a professional to inspect the garage door motor, and decide if it's suitable for a repair or replacement.

Your Garage Stalls

Your garage door should open or close all the way. If it stalls midway, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning motor. This garage door can pose a serious threat to you and your property.

If your garage door starts showing any of these signs, reach out to a garage door motor repair service in your area.

Garage Doors: Dealing with Faulty Springs

When my garage door stopped working, I didn't have the first idea of what the problem might be. I contacted a local garage door repair service and they said they would send a contractor out to examine the door. Once the contractor had taken a look, he reported that the springs within the door mechanism were broken. He then got to work repairing the problem. Within an hour or two, my garage door was operational again. The contractor explained that he thought I had been opening the door incorrectly and placing too much strain on the springs. He gave me lots of useful tips which will help to avoid this problem in the future.
